@PiercingsByJacob Aftercare Instructions:,
Cleaning Solutions: Exterior Body Piercings
- A prepackaged sterile saline wound wash such as "Neil Med Wound Wash" is advised for all exterior body piercings, but any brand of prepackaged sterile saline is acceptable. The sterile saline you chose should be labeled isotonic, and the ingredients should list .09% sodium chloride as the only ingredient. You should never use contact lens saline, eye drops, and other saline products on body piercings. Mixing your sea salt solution is no longer recommended. It commonly results in the solution being too salty and spicy, which can over-dry the piercing and interfere with healing.
Cleaning Solutions: Oral Piercings
- An alcohol-free mouthwash such as "Colgate Optic White."
Cleaning Instructions: Body Piercings
- Wash your hands thoroughly before cleaning your piercing for any reason.
- Spray saline on the tip of a Q-tip or a piece of gauze and gently massage around the piercing site 2 to 3 times a day or until the piercing is completely healed.
- Rinse thoroughly to remove any traces of saline and any loose crust.
- Dry by gently patting with a clean, disposable paper product. Cloth towels can harbor bacteria and snag on jewelry, causing injury.
- For oral piercings, maintain good oral hygiene, use mouthwash 2 to 3 times daily, and brush and floss regularly. For example, the outside of a lip piercing should still be cleaned with sterile saline 2 to 3 times a day.
What is normal to expect with a healing piercing?
- Initially: Some bleeding, localized swelling, tenderness, or bruising.
- During Healing: Some discoloration, itching, and secretion of a whitish-yellow fluid (not pus) that will form some crust on the jewelry. The tissue may tighten around the jewelry as it heals.
- Once Healed: The jewelry may not move freely in the piercing, do not force it. If you fail to include cleaning your piercing as a part of your daily hygiene routine, normal but smelly bodily secretions may accumulate. The piercing may seem healed before the healing process is complete, and this is because the tissues heal from the outside in, and although it feels fine, the interior remains fragile. Be patient and keep cleaning throughout the entire healing period.
What To Do & What To Avoid:
- Always wash your hands before touching the piercing. Leave it alone except when cleaning. During healing, it is not necessary to rotate or turn your jewelry. Exercise during healing is fine. Listen to your body. Make sure your bedding is changed regularly, and wear clean, comfortable, breathable clothing that protects your piercing while sleeping. Showers tend to be safer than baths, and bathtubs can harbor bacteria. If you bathe in a tub, clean it well before each use and rinse off your piercing when you get out.
- Keep the jewelry in unless you decide you no longer want the piercing. Remove it and let it heal. Seek professional help if needed. Avoid cleaning with alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, antibacterial soaps, iodine, or harsh products, as these can damage cells. Avoid ointments as they prevent necessary air circulation. Avoid Bactine, pierced ear care solutions, and other Benzalkonium Chloride products (BZK). Do not over-clean your piercing. Do not play with your piercing. Avoid all oral contact, rough play, and contact with other bodily fluids on or near the piercing, and avoid submerging the piercing in unhygienic bodies of water such as lakes, pools, hot tubs, etc.
